How to remove the trunk latch from a 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey
Hello people, today we will be removing a trunk latch from a 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey! This is pretty simple and with a part that can fail (Actuator) relatively often it's easy to replace.
Tools you will need
- T40 Torx (Or a hex of similar size)
- A number 2 Phillip's screwdriver
- Trim popper
- Flathead screwdriver
Removal
Step 1:
The first thing you need to do is pop the cover off the handle on the inner trim piece of the hatch/trunk lid, and remove the two Phillip's screws inside. After removing, you should be able to gently pry the panel off of the trunk. They use push pins so you will be prying away from the trunk.
Step 2:
Remove the cable that goes from the latch to the outer trunk handle. You pop the white plastic guide out of the black bracket and twist the cable and remove the little lead catch from the hole it is in. Don't kink the actual metal cable, as this can cause damage.
Step 3:
Remove the two hex bolts holding the latch to the trunk lid. They may have some thread-locker on them so don't be afraid to give it some force.
Step 4:
Pull the latch down and unplug the actuator (gray plugs) and the trunk open sensor (black plug) and you're done! Installation is the reversal of removal, and because you haven't touched the alignment of the striker plate or the trunk lid, once you slap the new latch in it should close smoothly and easily. Don't be afraid to put some dielectric grease on those plugs to prevent corrosion. Happy Wrenching!
