How to replace a battery 06-12 Jetta
Introduction
Today I’ll be showing you how to replace a battery in a 2006 VW Jetta (This How-To is applicable in all 2006-2012 Jetta’s)
Estimated Time: 20 minutes (for me anyways)
Tools Required
- 10mm wrench
- 13mm socket with deep extension
- 3/8 ratchet
Parts Required
- New or refurbished battery
Instructions:
Step 1:
Open the hood (pull the lever to release the hood)
Step 2: Removing surrounding plastic
You need to get the battery free. To do so, simply start removing the surrounding plastic holding the battery in place
Push this tab in and pull up to remove the roof plastic
Next, remove the side wall
Now the battery shouldn’t have any plastic surrounding it
Step 3: Freeing the battery
(I removed the MAF sensor to make it easier to mount the socket circled in the below photo) use your socket with extension to remove the 13mm bolt.
- Be cautious to not DROP the bracket
Next, with the bracket free it’s time to remove the Positive & Negative terminals +-
Step 4: Remove +- terminal cables
using our 10mm wrench, loosen but don’t completely remove the positive and negative 10mm nuts
- Remember to remove the negative cable FIRST from the terminal!
Tip to remove the cables...
position the 10mm wrench to leverage the cable free from the terminal
Step 5: Pull and replace battery
What are you waiting for... pull it out already!
At this point the battery is free from the mount just give it a pull
With the new battery around, position it so the positive terminal is in front
With the new battery in and the positive and negative cables are in tight. Be sure to turn the key to ON position to make sure the “new” battery is charged
