1996 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic engine oil change.
Tools and supplies: filter wrench, flat blade screwdriver, drain pan, funnel, oil and filter.
I am also going to add fuel stabilizer to the gas tanks.
First thing to do is go for a short ride to warm up the oil to operating temperature.
Next locate the oil tank filler cap, drain hose and oil filter.
The drain hose is down behind the pipes and attached to the frame with a metal clip.
Pry the plug out of the clip. Pull the hose down under the bike.
With the drain pan under the bike, loosen the hose clamp, pull the plug off of the hose and allow the oil to drain.
Let the oil drain out completely. then put the plug back into the hose, tighten the hose clamp and clip the assemble back onto the frame.
Move the drain pan to the front of the bike under the oil filter. Using the filter wrench, loosen the oil filter and spin it off by hand allowing the oil to drain.
After the oil stops draining, clean up with a soft rag.
Take the new filter and pour new oil in about half full. Lubricate the rubber ring with some of the oil.
Spin the new filter on by hand until the rubber gasket makes contact. Tighten it by hand 3/4 of a turn only!
Now it's time to fill the oil tank. My manual says to add 3 U.S. quarts (2.5 imperial quarts) or 2.8 liters.
Start the bike and warm it up to operating temperature. Turn it off and wait a minute With the bike level check the dipstick for oil level. Here is a diagram from my manual showing levels. I run mine where I have marked it in red.
The tappet screen should be checked every 5000 miles (8000 km). Clean with solvent if necessary. I'll do mine next time.
Check for leaks and you are done.
One more thing since I am parking it for the winter. I add some fuel stabilizer to each tank. I put 15 ml in each full tank of 94 premium.
